Part 1: Suddenly, Last Winter

Recently, a random plan with a friend ended up in us watching three back to back hard hitting Human Rights movies. In the subsequent 3 posts, I shall be posting my Review/ Opinions on the three movies!

Suddenly, Last Winter

The movie portrays the struggle of a gay couple in Italy during the time when Family Laws were being revised in Italy, in the year 2007. While I have personally never imagined homosexuality to be something abnormal or requiring medical care, most people shown in the documentary held quite contradictory views. For some, it is “a disease which needs medical attention”. For some, it is just unethical to question the order of God, who apparently created a Man and a Woman as a couple and not a Man and a Man or a Woman and a Woman. The movie talks about whether legal status be given to marriages between same sex couples. I fail to see, in the first place, why they should be illegal or for that matter, criminalized. But, maybe it is just my amateur mind which cannot understand the whole uproar over “marriage being an institution whose legitimacy be maintained at all costs”.

While most of the reasons put forward in the movie against giving same sex marriages a legal status seemed really quite illogical, I do think that same sex marriages could have an impact on the psychology of the children raised by same sex couples. However, being the optimist that I have learnt to become, if the children are explained carefully and in much detail their circumstances and how they are different from others and also how the children are really allowed to make a choice about their sexual orientation, we could actually be looking at creating a more mature society.

Most often, people are not even aware of their sexual orientation. And, I say this not by word of mouth, but with reference to many psychological theories. Those who know their sexual orientation find it difficult to accept it if it is “different” from the generally accepted norms. Those who accept it, find it difficult to be accepted by the society.

We talk in big words about Human Rights and how they are the basic undeniable rights of Humans. Not denying that Human Rights and their breech is another controversy in itself, I have a humble request to make. Can we please include the right to choose ones sexual orientation as one of the Human Rights? Yes, I sound like a kid asking for her candy. I might even start wailing if I don’t get it. But, the candy that I ask for can actually sweeten the lives of many! Perhaps everyone! We talk about a free society but we are not even free to choose who we love or who we want to share our life with! Now that simply points at screwed up principles!

That Was It!

Lean and lanky, he sat at his badly lit study table. He had spent most part of his youth and his entire old age in the same place, in front of the same bundle of papers, which would have once been blank, but now were a confused mess of mathematical symbols and philosophical meanderings. The batteries of his table lamp had long ago given up, but too busy to change them, he chose to carry on, letting the lamp shade accumulate dirt and his spectacles, a higher power. The cushion of his chair had sunk deep inside by the unmoving weight of his body. His fatigued mind could not remember the date of when it all started but his objective was still as crystal clear to him, as it had been then. He had embarked on the search for a separate identity, trying to defy the mathematical theorem of “Uniqueness of Identity”. “There is only one identity which is unique”. There has to be a way to finding another identity, a separate identity. Or so he thought. The Indo- Pak war, the Canadian War, the ne...

The MIC Syndrome!

Today, with deep admiration for myself and a few others who helped me in my discovery, I present before my readers a not-so-new genre of males: The MIC males, short for The Messed up, In Denial, Crying males! At the risk of sounding sexist and fearing unwelcomed remarks, the usual disclaimer is as follows: The category of humans being described here is just from personal experience or/and experiences of others that I happen to witness quite closely and observed acutely. Before really describing this genre, it makes sense to tell you their importance in the world. Well, to say the least, they help in bringing variety to our otherwise boring lives! If you are finally tired of staring at the ceiling of your house, it’s time for you to go out there looking for these men! Where will you find them? Now that’s a tricky one! Generally, their physical characteristics can be quite deceptive and they do not hang out in clusters like the geese. You really have to be lucky enough to be able ...

Spirals and Circles

So here is a mathematical answer to a question that I have quite often asked myself and seldom troubled my friends with: “Does life move in Spirals or Circles?” The course that life takes is often described as a maze by some and a road with lots of twists and turns by others. A complicated web of events, people, emotions and thoughts, caught between these is you, the spider. A lot of our religious books refer to the course of life as “the cycle of life”, which essentially means “the circle of life”. It is perhaps the phrase used most often during those innumerable philosophical discussions that boring people like us have over drinks with friends. Yes, I have been ranting for quite a while, without really bringing in what I promised: the mathematics! In laymen terms, a circle is a two dimensional figure which is a collection of all points that are at equal distances from a given point. Essentially, a circle starts and ends at the same point. A spiral, is a three dimensional figur...
